Only the Beatles sold more singles

Ken Dodd was the biggest-selling pop star of the Sixties after The Beatles, new analysis of the decade’s charts has revealed.

His track Tears was the third most successful hit of the era, behind the Fab Four’s She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand.

The new chart was compiled from sales data from the time and unveiled by Tony Blackburn on Radio 2 today.

At four and five, behind Dodd’s track, were another two Beatles hits: Can't Buy Me Love and I Feel Fine.

Dodd had a number of hits in the early 60s, including Happiness, but Tears was the most successful, making No 1 and becoming the top-seller of 1965.
