Gervais to host Golden Globes

'There are some things you just don't turn down'

Ricky Gervais is to host next year’s Golden Globes from Los Angeles, it has been announced today.

Gervais said: ‘Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free rein as a host. I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don't turn down.

Paul Telegdy, of Golden Globe broadcasters NBC, added: ‘Ricky is certainly one of the funniest people on the planet and has provided some of the most hilarious and memorable awards show moments in recent memory. His unique comedic style will enhance the only awards show that brings together television and film stars to celebrate entertainment's biggest night of the year.’

Gervais, 48, has previously won two Golden Globes for The Office.

At last year’s ceremony, he cracked a joke about his Extras costar Kate Winslet, who won best supporting actress for The Reader. ‘What did I tell you, Winslet – do a Holocaust movie, win an award. That's the trouble with Holocaust films: There's no gag reel on the DVD."

The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 17 and aired to more than 160 countries.

Nominations will be announced on December 15.
