Tanks for the series

BBC sitcom for McHugh's squaddie character

Scottish stand-up Greg McHugh has landed a six-part BBC sitcom for his creation, Gary: Tank Commander.

He started performing the character of Gary McLintoch – a soldier who has returned home from Iraq – at Edinburgh’s Stand comedy club, and in 2005 he featured in a ten-minute Funny Cuts mockumentary on E4.

Now the idea has been picked up by BBC Scotland, for a series to be aired later this year.

It is one of three comedies in the pipeline north of the border; alongside Limmy’s Show and sketch show Burnistoun, based in a fictional Scottish town.

All are being made by Glasgow-based company The Comedy Unit, whose creative director Colin Gilbert said: ‘We're confident that these three very different series featuring the next generation of Scottish comedy talent will continue to make Scotland laugh.’

BBC Scotland’s Ewan Angus added: ‘It is exciting to be supporting and developing comedy talent from the different worlds of television, internet and stand-up for our audiences in Scotland.’
