The top gag Merchant
His live appearances may be few and far between, but Stephen Merchant has been named comedian of the year by GQ magazine.
The Office co-creator has only recently returned to a few circuit gigs after nearly a decade away.
His performances are never announced in advance, so he can build up an act without having to match the expectations fans of his TV work would have if they came specifically to see him.
The low-key approach is in stark contrast to collaborator Ricky Gervais, whose third high-profile tour is coming to an end with gigs at London’s Royal Albert Hall and Hammersmith Apollo.
Merchant was given his award at yesterday’s GQ Men Of The Year awards by celebrity couple Vernon Kaye and Tess Daley.
Simon Pegg also triumphed at the at the Royal Opera House ceremony. He was named actor of the year, and given his award by David Schwimmer, who directed his latest film Run Fatboy, Run.
Michael Caine was given a lifetime achievement honour, and other winners included James Blunt, Kanye West, Kaiser Chiefs, Gordon Ramsay and Alexander McQueen.
