'Earl' could be king...

Redemption comedy is critics' favourite

The American version of The Office and My Name Is Earl were the best shows of the past 12 months, according to US television critics.

Both comedies nabbed three nominations in the Television Critics Association awards, announced today, including shots at the best comedy title.

Other shortlisted shows were The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, Chris Rock’s Everybody Hates Chris and hospital sitcom Scrubs.

Meanwhile, the stars of both shows – Steve Carell and Jason Lee respectively – are up for the award for individual achievement in comedy.

Others nominated in this category are Jon Stewart for The Daily Show, Stephen Colbert for Daily Show spin-off The Colbert Report and Lauren Graham for the sitcom Gilmore Girls.

The Office completes its trio of nominations with a nod in the most prestigious of the awards, Program Of The Year, against Lost, 24, The Sopranos and Gray’s Anatomy.

My Name Is Earl’s third nomination is for best new show, where it is up against Chris Rock’s Everybody Hates Chris, Prison Break, The Colbert Report and Big Love.

Will & Grace, which has just come to an end after eight years, has been nominated for the Heritage award, alongside The West Wing and The Hallmark Hall of Fame

The winners will be announced in California on July 23.
