Hurricane Wilma cancels Gorman's show

Dave Gorman has been forced to cancel part of his American tour because of Hurricane Wilma.

He was due to perform his Googlewhack Adventure in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this weekend.

However, with the hurricane expected to hit the Florida coast within the next few days, producers decided to cancel the show.

He will now remain in Gainsborough in the north of the state, where he performed earlier this week and which is away from the storm’s predicted path.

Writing on his website, Gorman said: ‘This afternoon I was supposed to be flying to Fort Lauderdale… but as Hurricane Wilma is also thinking of heading there this weekend, the venue and the producers have decided in their wisdom that it's unwise for us to go there.

‘I've never had a show cancelled because of a hurricane before. How exciting. I hope it doesn't wreak too much havoc, mind.’

Thousands of tourists and locals have already fled resorts in Mexico and Cuba, where Wilma is expected to hit soon.

Florida Governor Jeb Bush has declared a state of emergency, although mandatory evacuations for residents of the Florida Keys island chain have been put back as the hurricane is travelling slower than first expected.

However newspapers have told residents that ‘every event scheduled to take place in Florida on Saturday and beyond is currently in doubt.’

Gorman has been touring the States with the Googlewhack show since August, to critical acclaim. He has already performed in California, Ohio, Illinois, Arizona and Florida and has dates scheduled in Wisconsin and Washington before heading home in December.

His Radio 4 show, Genius, in which experts try out listeners’ ideas to improve life, starts next Thursday at 6.30pm.
