Tate's in the States
Catherine Tate makes her American TV debut tonight – and critics are already hailing her as the next Tracey Ullman.
Cable station BBC America is airing her show, which beat the likes of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Frasier for the best comedy award at last year’s Banff international TV festival.
And in previews, US critics have already called it “entertainingly smart” and“broad and raucous”.
In the New York Daily News, TV critic David Bianculli wrote: “When you have an actress this talented, just let her create, repeat and explore a range of outrageous characters, and see what happens. What happens, as it turns out, is very, very funny indeed.”
LA Weekly said it was “a riveting display of oddball character comedy”.
And trade paper Hollywood Reporter called it “bright, creative and quirky”
