Hudd recovers from exhaustion

Roy Hudd is to return to the theatre show he was forced to quit because of exhaustion.

The 68-year-old comic will now appear in The Solid Gold Cadillac when it opens in Malvern next Monday, before transferring to the West End on September 22.

Hudd, who was appearing opposite Keeping Up Appearances star Patricia Routledge, dropped out of the show on doctor’s orders last Friday.

A spokeswoman said he has been resting since, adding:  “His doctors have assessed him as fit and able to return to the show next Monday, the first day of a weeks’ run at the Malvern Theatre.”

While he was ill,  Hudd’s understudy, Derek Howard, took over his role in the classic American comedy at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford, Surrey.

Hudd, an expert on music hall comedians, has enjoyed 35 years of fame, hostingThe News Huddlines on Radio 2 for almost 30 of them.

He recently returned to TV, playing Archie Shuttleworth in Coronation Street.

The Solid Gold Cadillac premiered on Broadway in 1953, and was made into a film three years later.
