Catherine Tate scoops top TV prize

The Catherine Tate Show has won one of the leading awards in international television.

The BBC2 sketch show even beat off the Christmas edition of awards-show favourite The Office to land the comedy prize at the Banff Rockie Awards on Sunday night.

Other shortlisted shows were Frasier, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Hardware.

Tate landed the show, which is made by independent company Tiger Aspect, after a spell on the stand-up circuit – and a critically acclaimed Edinburgh show in 2001. The TV  show attracted around two million viewers when it was aired on BBC2 in February and March this year

British programme-makers walked off with the lion's share of the awards at the ceremony, triumphing in eight out of the 15 categories

They were handed out at the start of  Banff Television Festival, this year celebrating its silver anniversary in the Canadian Rockies.
