Tribute gig honours stand-up Borr

Friends of comedian Brandi Borr, who died of breast cancer earlier this year, have organised a benefit gig in her memory.

The show, at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre, will feature Stephen Merchant, Will Smith and We Are Klang among others.

Almost all of the comics on the bill became friends of Borr while she worked on the UK circuit in the early part of this decade, before returning to her native Chicago, where she died in January at the age of 39.

Many of her American relatives will be attending the June 2 show, in aid of Breast Cancer Haven, and organsiers intend to use the event to show them ‘how much she was loved by the comedy community’.

Adam Bloom, who will be performing at the gig, said: ‘Brandi lived for comedy and loved everything about it. Her passion was a joy to be around. She also introduced me to the woman I’m marrying later this year.’

Marek Larwood, from We Are Klang, added: ‘I’ve been racking my brains trying to think of words that would do Brandi justice, she was simply wonderful.’

And Jo Enright said: ‘Her down to earth and genuine nature shone through her work. She was very funny. It’s an honour to be a part of this gig.’

The line-up also includes Matt Kirshen, Sol Bernstein and Paul Provenza, director of The Aristocrats film. Click here to buy tickets.

The Bloomsbury is also hosting another benefit in June in memory of Russell Churney, who was Julian Clary’s comic sidekick for seven years.

Churney, a musician who was also a member of the Fascinating Aida cabaret group, died of pancreatic cancer in February last year, at the age of 42.

Clary will be headlining the June 29 concert, which will also feature appearances by Barb Jungr, Tina C, Sandi Toksvig and more.
