Loyisa Gola on language

From Chortle's Fast Fringe

South African comedian Loyiso Gola says speaking Afrikaans freaks out the Dutch when he uses it in Holland.

'It's a language we were forced to speak during apartheid,' he said. 'It's a Dutch dialect from the 1600s. I speak that language fluently

'It's is crazy because every time I go to Amsterdam, I break into Afrikaans. It confuses the shit out of them. For them it's like seeing a black Shakespeare. They're like, "Where the hell does he know how to speak that stuff?"'

He was speaking at Chortle's Fast Fringe to promote his Edinburgh Fringe show, Unlearning, which is on at Gilded Balloon Teviot at 9pm.
