Brett Goldstein – Original Review

Though only a couple of years into the business, Brett Goldstein is a performance dynamo, with punchily amusing material to match.His set has a pace and energy that can generate a high-voltage spark in even the quietest gigs, ensuring the perfect presentation for his gag-driven material.
Some of the jokes are, admittedly, formulaic, such as his routine about how rubbish the office Christmas party is because he’s self-employed, but they are always reliable, and executed with style. This, though, is the baseline setting, so while solid is the bare minimum you can expect from this slick-yet-personable performer, much of the material aims much higher than this, and invariably hits the target.
At his best, he’s a sharp operator who deftly twists expectations for off-kilter punchlines that catch the audience unawares, whether he be discussing biographies of thuggish criminals, the unexpected side-effects of Barack Obama’s election, or gangs of hoodies. He’s a prolific writer, too, so we can only expect better things from this promisingly entertaining up-and-comer.
