Ghee, I'm sorry!

Sunday Brunch serves butter to vegan Jon RIchardson

comedySunday Brunch host Simon Rimmer has had to apologise after feeding  Jon Richardson a dish that broke his vegan diet

On yesterday’s show, chef Asma Khan cooked the guests Massor dhal, a dish which includes fried prawns.

Rimmer served Richardson a portion without the seafood… but it still contained ghee, or clarified butter.

The presenter confessed later in the show, admitting: ‘Earlier on, in the previous cooking item, I may have informed guests that the dhal was in fact vegan. It was, of course, ghee used in the recipe, which isn’t vegan.

‘I allowed Jon Richardson, who is indeed a vegan, to eat some of it. On behalf of myself and the Sunday Brunch team, I would like to sincerely apologise and hope I haven’t offended you and spoiled your life.’

Richardson, who appeared on the show with his wife Lucy Beaumont to plug their Dave show Meet The Ricardsons, replied: "When I’m sick during my interview, you can take responsibility for that. But it was delicious – and it could be vegan, there’s no reason why you couldn’t use a vegan spread in it.’

Of course fellow vegans were not so understanding on social media.

‘This programme has done more to offend vegans this morning than Bernard Matthews has his whole life,’ said one Twitter user, with the calm understatement the platform is known for.

Richardson has been a vegan for just over three years.
