A honeymoon horror story
It's probably not the ideal start to a marriage.
Jon Richardson accidentally took his wife Lucy Beaumont on honeymoon to one of the most dangerous cities in America, but was too stubborn to admit he'd made a mistake... even when they witnessed a gang-related stabbing.
Fellow comedian Beaumont revealed the horror story on Richardson's Dave show Ultimate Worrier last night.
She said that when they planned they driving trip along the Californian coast after their 2015 marriage, Richardson 'just looked on the map and said, "Ooh Santa Cruz".'
'Jon booked a motel and paid for it online,' she added. 'And I looked up Santa Cruz: it has the worst homicide rate in all of America. Worse than LA. I told this to Jon and he said, "Well, I've booked it now."'
Refusing to forfeit the cost of the room, he insisted they stay there anyway. And as they enjoyed a falafel looking out to the sea, things turned nasty.
'I did think, as it was getting a bit later, things were turning, but he wouldn't have any of it,' Beaumont explained.
'Anyway a gang turned up and one of them got stabbed in the chest. I looked at Jon and he remained emotionless – like he was looking at two pigeons having a fight. And I was in shock. I was like "Ooh, I can't eat this".'
But – waste not, want not – Richardson gallantly stepped in to eat her falafel.
Beaumont lamented that the scare 'was all because he couldn't admit we were in a dangerous place.'
And when fellow guest Jonathan Ross quizzed Richardson about his decision, the comic insisted: 'It sounds worse than it is...'
