High praise indeed...
For anyone who’s ever thought the Edinburgh Comedy Awards panel must be on drugs – here’s some corroborating evidence.
Mae Martin has revealed that the ‘craziest thing that's ever happened in a show’ came during a performance of her award-nominated hour Dope this year.
As she was speaking about her past narcotics addiction, she was distracted by a particularly empathetic audience member.
'A guy smoked crack in the show!’ Martin told sketch comic Matt Skillington on his podcast. 'He was in the third row!'
The chatty older gentleman had previously been 'chiming in' throughout Martin's performance in the City Cafe's airless basement 'but he was totally manageable’. However, 'right near the end of the show, he was really quiet and I could see that he was just staring at the ground.
'Then he pulled out a crack pipe and started smoking crack. I didn't want to draw attention to it, I knew it would be chaotic.
'I was really shocked. And the people around him could tell. It smelled like chemicals and there was no ventilation in the room. It was just near the end of the show, so I thought I'll power through ...'
Unfortunately, or perhaps not, it was also the night that the Edinburgh Comedy Award judges were in.
'Maybe they just got high on crack and were like, "it's the best show I've ever seen!",’ Martin joked.
