Edinburgh Fringe: Spiegeltent returns to St Andrew Square

Historic venue will again host Le Clique

The spiegeltent will be returning to St Andrew Square in Edinburgh this year after an eight-year absence.

It will host La Clique, from July 10 to the end of August as the cabaret/burlesque show marks its 21st birthday

A wooden-framed spiegeltent occupied St Andrew Square  during the Fringe from 2014 to 2016 – until corporate neighbours such as RBS and Standard Life insisted the privately owned space, be used for ‘quiet enjoyment’.

The return of the Famous Spiegeltent – which first appeared at the Fringe in 1996 – may help shift the festival's centre of gravity slightly back towards the New Town.

Crafted from Timber, canvas, velvet and kaleidoscopic leaded glass, the venue features bevelled mirrors, intimate booths, and ornate bar and parquetry teak dance floor.

It was built in 1920 and is the oldest spiegeltent still touring. Marlene Dietrich sang Falling In Love Again on its stage in the 1930s.

Since its inception in 2004 at the Fringe, La Clique has  played to more than a million people in 21 cities across 11 countries.

Creative producer David Bates says: ‘This will be the sexiest, funniest and most dangerous birthday party in town, and we are honoured to share this celebration with the people and the place that has forever changed all our lives.’
