Amandaland 'returning for series 2'

So it's reported, as comedy proves a smash hit

Amandaland is reportedly returning for a second series.

Although the BBC has declined to comment on the  speculation, The Daily Star reports that work is underway on scripts for a six-part second series, with the episodes set to be filmed later this year.

Lucy Punch, who plays the title character – a social climber forced to relocate from chichi Chiswick to more down-to-earth South Harlesden is said to have signed up for the second series, as has Joanna Lumley, who plays Amanda's mum, and Philippa Dunne, who plays Anne, her put-upon friend.

Even if the article is entirely speculative, a second series seems inevitable. The first episode of the Motherland spin-off  – which aired on February 5 – attracted more than seven million viewers in its first seven seats, making it the most-watched new BBC One comedy since Ghosts in 2019.

It has also been received with universal good reviews, and sparked countless opinion pieces from columnists who identify with its middle-class setting.

An unnamed source told the Daily Star’s Hot TV column: ‘Almost five million Brits are hooked on Amandaland. It's become a massive hit. Top brass at the BBC want another series because they think it has the potential to become a mega hit. They think it could soon become even more popular than Motherland.'

The show is written by  created by Holly Walsh, Helen Serafinowicz and Barunka O’Shaughnessy, who created the show with Sharon Horgan, whose production company Merman makes it.
