Sydney May takes Komedia's new act crown

Wes Defoe and Aiden Lonergan are runners-up

Sydney May was crowned winner of Komedia’s New Comedy Award in Brighton last night.

The mindset coach, who has been performing comedy since November 2023, impressed judges with a routine largely about her blindness.

After taking the title she said: ‘Pinch me, punch me – I can’t believe this is real.’

Wes Defoe and Aiden Lonergan were named runners-up.

The competition – run with the venue’s Comic Boom nights and Brighton-based journalist Victoria Nangle – has previously been won by Michael Akadiri, Sam Williams and Andrew Fox.

The other finalists last night were: Emma Cohen, Rachel Quinn, Prateek Kohli, Donna Williams, Stanley MacDonald and Eli Hart.

A full review will follow later.
