Mae Martin announces London music gig

Hear the first two tracks from their I'm A TV album here

Mae Martin is to play a music gig in London to launch their debut album I’m A TV.

The ‘earnest’ musical project is described as a ‘significant expansion’ of the comedian’s ‘creative portfolio’.

The album drops on February 27, and will be launched the previous night with a gig in Los Angeles. Performances in Toronto and New York follow – culminating in a show The Forum in Kentish Town, North London, on March 9. Tickets will be available here from Wednesday.

Breaking the news on social media, Martin posed: ‘Ohhh man I’m excited to announce I’m doing a mini tour in support of my new album.’

Chortle reported on the comic’s new project last week, and they have now released the first two tracks, Good Dream and Stowaway.

Jeffrey Remedios, chairman of Universal Music Canada, which is releasing the album, said: ‘Mae is an incredibly talented, multi-disciplinary artist. They show up authentically, sharing their life experiences with openness, humour, honesty - and the result is a deep, personal connection with countless fans.

‘Adding music to Mae's portfolio feels like a natural extension. The body of work they've created is intimate and inspiring. We couldn't be more thrilled to partner with Mae in bringing it to the world.

Martin previously collaborated with fellow Canadian comedian Carolyn Taylor on her 2023 music track Love Is Pain, and London-based singer-songwriter Charles Watson’s Going Places, released the previous year.

The comic previously described making an album as ‘daunting and enigmatic’, but nevertheless wrote the entirety of I’m A TV solo.

‘I've been writing songs since I was a teenager, with no intention of ever sharing them,’ they said.

‘But it took moving to LA a couple of years ago and really having some time to sit alone in a rented apartment to reconnect with that Toronto teen. I didn't realise how badly I wanted to sit with an acoustic guitar by myself and get to say what I wanted to say without the pressure to find a punchline.

‘Then, filling out the sounds with a band, collaborating with friends, I just leaned into warmth and simplicity and tried to learn this new medium as best I could and trust my gut.

‘All that matters to me is that the album feels like an authentic extension of everything I write and do. No matter the medium I've been trying to say the same thing my whole life, and I kind of hope I never figure out how to say it perfectly because the joy is in trying to express it.’

The album’s track listing is

1. Try Me
2. Good Dream
3. Big Bear
4. Stowaway
5. I Love You So Much
6. No Cowboy
7. Garbage Strike
8. Brought Me Round
9. Quiet Street
10. People Get Back Up
