Brassic bows out

Sky's hit comedy to end after seven series

Brassic is to end after its seventh series airs this year, Sky has announced.

The show, which launched in 2019, is the most watched Sky original comedy of all time, and will be bowing out on a high, with the broadcaster saying series six attracted the highest audiences of the last three years, without giving numbers.

Brassic has also proved popular on Netflix. For two weeks last September, old episodes comprised nearly half of the top 10 Netflix’s most-watched showss

The show was created by Danny Brocklehurst and Joe Gilgun, who also stars as Vinnie, leader of a loose criminal gang.

Brocklehurst  said: ‘When Joe Gilgun and I sat down to create Brassic, we couldn't have imagined, in our wildest dreams, that we would do seven series and gather such a loyal and loving fan base.

‘It's been a complete joy to create this eccentric world, but all good things must come to an end, and we want to stop while we are still riding high. Maybe they can finally give us that Bafta.’

Gilgun has been nominated for best male performance in a comedy programme four years running.

A Sky spokesperson commented: ‘Since Brassic arrived on our screens in 2019, it has become Sky's most successful comedy ever.

‘Fans very quickly became attached to this dynamic group of friends, as they found unconventional ways to win at life in northern suburbia.

‘We would like to thank Joe Gilgun, Danny Brocklehurst and the whole cast and crew – past and present – for bringing us all a truly iconic series, which we’ve loved for its special mix of hilarity and heart.’

Programme-makers Calamity Films have now officially started production on the seventh and final series.

Company founder  David Livingstone said: ‘Somehow, some crazy stories and a bucketful of truth, combined with an astoundingly talented cast, have created the most loyal fanbase you could ever hope for.

‘From Joe Gilgun’s unconventional imagination to Danny Brocklehurst’s brilliant writing, it's all been a blast. This farewell series is for the fans.’

The returning cast for series seven also include Ryan Sampson, Michelle Keegan, Aaron Heffernan, Parth Thakerar, Joanna Higson  and  Steve Evets.

Sky said the series will ‘go out with a bang and with even more of the madness and mayhem that fans have cherished over the years’.
