More cast announced for Amandaland

Motherland spin-off coming next month

The BBC has announced the cast of Amandaland, the spin-off from Motherland that will air from February.

The new show revolves around Lucy Punch’s snobbish character Amanda having to downsize post-divorce and move to South Harlesden, or ‘SoHa’ as the estate agent euphemistically calls the area around Wormwood Scrubs prison.

Also reprising their roles from Motherland are, as previously announced, Joanna Lumley as her domineering mum Felicity and Philippa Dunne as her put-upon friend – or minion – Anne.

Today’s newly announced cast include Samuel Anderson – who was Fingers in Gavin & Stacey and Daniel Wilson in Trollied – Siobhan McSweeney (Sister Michael  in Derry Girls) and Peter Serafinowicz.

His sister Helen is one of the creators of Amandaland alongside Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh and Barunka O’Shaughnessy. All but Horgan have scripted the show, with Ghosts’ Laurence Rickard also on the writing team.

Tanya Qureshi, head of comedy at the BBC says: ‘We can’t wait for audiences to see Amanda’s new chapter, brought to life by such a talented cast and a wonderfully sharp set of characters. It’s going to be a real treat.’

In the six-part series, Amanda has to try to get her head around raising teenagers, dealing teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts and eco anxiety.

Horgan, whose production company Merman is making the show, said: ‘I was genuinely sad having to say goodbye to Motherland. There's such a fondness for that show and those characters.

‘So it was a real thrill to get to pick up the further adventures of Amanda and Anne, not to mention Felicity. Lucy, Phillipa and Joanna are top of their game in these roles and are joined by an incredibly funny and talented new cast. Can't wait to showcase the next challenges of parenthood and the very particular kind of friendship the school gates bring.’

Also joining the cast are Rochenda Sandall, who was Lisa McQueen in Line of Duty and  Ekow Quartey who played James in Aisling Bea’s This Way Up.
