Gavin & Stacey, behind the scenes
The BBC have released dozens of pictures – both on and off-screen – for the final episode of Gavin & Stacey, ahead of its Christmas Day broadcast.
Along with the cache of promotional images, the broadcaster has shared interviews with all the key cast members, including Ruth Jones and James Corden, who wrote the show.
Pictures show the cast limbo dancing at a wild house party:
While other shots show them in Dave’s coach, apparently en route to a wedding.
Although it appears not to go too smoothly, as other pictures show Bryn, played by Rob Brydon, and Jason, played by Robert Wilfort, fleeing the coach and also trying to open a farm gate:
One of the behind-the-scenes shots shows the crew rigging equipment on and around the bus:
Here are a couple more images from the special:
Corden said the last day of filming was very emotional with ‘a lot of tears’, all captured by the second crew filming a behind-the-scenes documentary to go out on New Year’s Day.
And Joanna Page, who plays Stacey, said: ‘I couldn't stop crying, because it just felt it was such a huge journey that was ending.
‘I delivered my last lines, the way that I wanted to, and the way that I needed to, and then when they shouted, "it's a wrap" and then they clapped all of us goodbye and I just hugged Mat and we both stood there crying.’
Mat Horne also admitted he was ‘sobbing uncontrollably’ and says that the behind-the-scenes cameras ‘caught me at a particularly raw moment in the show and in my life’.
One of the black-and-white behind-the-scenes images shows him with a cake, apparently to mark the end of filming:
The last Christmas special, in 2019, aired on a cliffhanger with Jones’s character Nessa proposing to Corden’s Smithy.
In her interview, Jones said one of her earlier memories of the show was ‘Being in Leicester Square dressed as Nessa and handing Smithy a piece of pizza and both our characters taking such an instant dislike to one another, who’d have thought those two characters would go on the journey they’ve so far gone on!’
And she admitted that after filming the final episode she stole the glazed egg holder shaped like a hen from Gwen’s house as a souvenir.
• Gavin & Stacey: The Finale will air at 9pm on Christmas Day and the behind-the-scenes documentary Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell will air at 7pm on New Year’s Day, both on BBC One and iPlayer.
