The Office goes to Mexico

Another remake for Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s comedy

The Office is getting a Mexican remake, La Oficina.

Hot on the heels of the Australian version, starring Felicity Ward, Amazon’s Prime Video is to embark on the new version that will only be available in Latin America and Spain.

The news was reported by trade website Variety, which names comedy veteran Gaz Alazraki’s Máquina Vega as as director and executive producer and Marcos Bucay as show runner.

This will be the 14th incarnation of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s groundbreaking sitcom, with other versions including  France, Chile and Poland – as well as the US version starring Steve Carell.

The Australian remake attracted a mutual critical reaction when it landed on Prime Video earlier this month, with many reviewers commenting that it was brining nothing new to to the table compared with previous versions.

Ward told fellow comic Wil Anderson on his Everyone Relax podcast that she was not listing to any online reactions.

She said: ‘I’m not on the internet apart from ‘people you follow’ on Instagram. That’s the only comments that I read. So what I’m getting [with the] pressure is my mum calling up and saying, "I’m really proud of you".’
