Joe Lycett to launch a 'manifesto for the arts'
Joe Lycett as been named as host of this year’s Sky Arts Awards.
To capitalise on his involvement, the comic has anonymously been staging a number of ‘Stop The Arts’ protests at cultural landmarks such as Shakespeare’s Globe in London - aimed at highlighting how government cuts and social inequalities are affecting the sector.
When hosting the ceremony on September 17, the comedian will unveil a ‘manifesto for the arts’ containing proposals he wants the government to take up to improve conditions for people working in the industry.’
He said: ‘Over the last few weeks I've been meeting with arts organisations, venues and artists to devise my manifesto for the arts, with clear and actionable points the government can do right now to improve conditions for everyone working in Britain’s cultural industries.’
Lycett’s involvement in the ‘Stop The Arts’ protests – which declared that ‘art is complete’ and a waste of time – was revealed on social media yesterday.
He said on Instagram: ‘Who needs a protest group trying to stop the arts when successive governments have been doing all they can to bring art to a standstill. That’s why I’ve come up with my manifesto for the arts.
Fern Brady, Blindboyboatclub and Julia Masli have all been nominated for the comedy section of the Sky Arts Awards.
And Ania Magliano is the comedy entrant for the breakthrough award, which features one rising star from each artistic discipline covered by the accolades, with Dreaming Whilst Black creator and star Adjani Salmon representing telecision.
The awards were previously known asathe South Bank Sky Arts Awards, which Lord Melvyn Bragg hosted.
Each of the Sky Arts Awards nominees has been selected by a group of more than 50 jurors across the arts and media industry, including the likes of Michael Sheen, Jesse Armstrong, Oti Mabuse ad Josh Widdicombe.
