Edinburgh Fringe accolades now come with cash prizes

The Comedians’ Choice Awards are returning to this year’s Fringe, it has been announced.

This year’s winners will get a cash prize for the first time – although the value has not been disclosed – to help with the cost of their Edinburgh Fringe accommodation.

Comedians who vote are also being asked to share information about their lodgings costs this year to help build a picture about the scale of the crisis, and to ‘inform the appropriate level of financial support to be awarded’.

There will be three awards – best show, best newcomer and best person (who does not need to be a performer) – all voted on by comedians at the festival.

Voting is now open here and closes at midday on August 19, with the winners announced late that night in a ceremony at the Counting House.

The awards were founded in 2014 and previous winners have included Mat Ewins, Julia Masli and Joz Norris

They are administered by the British Comedy Guide, with  Angel Comedy and The Museum of Comedy supporting the financial part of this year’s accolades.

Thanks for reading. If you find Chortle’s coverage of the comedy scene useful or interesting, please consider supporting us with a monthly or one-off ko-fi donation.
Any money you contribute will directly fund more reviews, interviews and features – the sort of in-depth coverage that is increasingly difficult to fund from ever-squeezed advertising income, but which we think the UK’s vibrant comedy scene deserves.
