Baby Reindeer has won its first award – scooping the breakthrough limited series at the Gotham TV Awards in New York last night.

Comedian Richard Gadd, who created and starred in the show, accepted the trophy on the behalf of his collaborators.

He was joined on stage by co-stars Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau plus executive producers Matt Jarvis and  Ed Macdonald.

He thanked his mum and dad for ‘messing me up enough to make me an artist’ as well as Netflix, saying: ‘I never thought in a million years that this s dark, weird messed-up show would go on to have the universal love that it's received and and I'm so grateful to  them for for giving us this platform to to tell the story to the world

He added: ‘It’s weird that a show as messed up as this has gone on to strike a chord with so many people.

‘I think it speaks to the fact that I think a lot of people in the world are struggling right now. I can’t offer much in the way of advice, but I do know that nothing lasts forever. So if you are in a rut, just keep going. Persevere, persevere, persevere and I promise you things will get better.’

The three Baby Reindeer stars also presented an award to Australia’s Harriet Dyer for outstanding performance in a comedy series, for her role in Colin From Accounts, which she created with her husband Patrick Brammall.

Colin From Accounts – available on iPlayer in the UK – also won the Gotham for breakthrough comedy series:

Breakthrough non-fiction series went to comedian Jerrod Carmichael’s Reality Show, currently screening on Sky Comedy in the UK.
