Mae Martin makes a documentary about gender fluidity
Mae Martin has made a documentary about gender identity and sexual fluidity.
Fluid: Life Beyond the Binary is to air on CBC in the comic’s native Canada later this month.
In a trailer, the non-binary stand-up and Taskmaster star – who created the Channel sitcom Feel Good – says: ‘I know some people say all specials are divided into male and female but is that really true?
‘I want to know what science has to say about gender and sexual fluidity.’
The clip features scientists talking about the ‘amazing diversity’ in the animal kingdom.
Filmmaker Michelle Mama wrote on Instagram that the documentary is ‘a fantastic and surprising look at what nature has to say about gender and will be a great tool for kids, teachers, and folks to open discussions about the complex science of gender’.
In the film, Martin also says it is ‘easy’ for some people to ‘drum up this hysteria’ about gender ‘because there is still a sense from a lot of people that transness is in some way unnatural. But maybe that’s because a lot of people don’t really know nature.’
And in a post on Instagram they added: ‘I hope it’s a helpful resource for anyone trying to help their loved ones to understand them. Or for anyone fighting the good fight trying to dampen this absurd rising hysteria around trans identities. Nature is full of beautiful diversity and variance. And this doc is chock full of joyful and well-researched info.’
It airs on CBC on March 28, but there is no news yet as to whether it will get a UK broadcast.
