Ruth Jones shuts down Gavin & Stacey comeback report

'Sadly just a rumour' co-creator says

Ruth Jones has poured cold water on reports that Gavin & Stacey is to return for another Christmas special.

Respected US entertainment site Deadline excited fans by reporting that work had started on a one-off episode five years after the last aired.

But now star Jones – who writes the show with James Corden – played down the reports as ‘sadly a rumour’.

She told Ireland’s RTE Radio 1: ‘I don’t know what to say. All I can say is, if there was something to say on that front, James and I would happily announce it, we would.

‘But some random journalist who's decided to write this. I’m lost for words. It’s hilarious.. I just have to smile.’

She also rubbished an anonymous report that Netflix was  trying to poach the sitcom from the BBC saying: ‘Apparently there's a bidding war going on between the BBC and Netflix and I love it because it says "a source says"… Who is this source?’

Gavin & Stacey’s 2019 Christmas special attracted a mammoth 18 million viewers, and it ended with a cliffhanger when Nessa (Jones) proposed to Smithy (Corden).

Deadline reported that most of the main cast are expected to return for the special, which will be filmed this summer.

The ensemble also includes Mathew Horne, Joanna Page,  Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb and Julia Davis.

In September, Corden dampened speculation about a return to the show, saying: ‘I genuinely don’t know if we’ll ever do another one. I think Ruth  and I would love to make something together again… I really don’t know with Gavin & Stacey. I think we feel so proud of that last special.’
