Tributes paid to Dad's Army star Ian Lavender
Tributes have been paid to Dad's Army actor Ian Lavender, who has died at the age of 77.
The actor – who played Private Frank Pike in the comedy for a decade from the age of 22 – was the last surviving main cast member of the series.
He died on Friday but news was only confirmed today. His agent Hilary Gagan told the PA news agency the star had been ill for some time and died with his wife and sons at his side.
The social media account of the touring Dad's Army Radio Show said: ‘We are deeply saddened to hear the passing of the wonderful, Ian Lavender. In what truly marks the end of an era, Ian was the last surviving member of the Dad's Army main cast.
‘His wonderful performance as Private Frank Pike will live on for decades to come. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter enjoyed by millions. We will dedicate this year's tour to his memory. Our thoughts and love are with Ian’s wonderful wife Miki, their family and close friends.’
Lavender’s other comedy credits include Yes Minister, Keeping Up Appearances and Goodnight Sweetheart. He also had a stint on EastEnders, playing Derek Harkinson, for 240 episodes.
Fellow 1970s comedy star Robin Askwith posted today: ‘My dear dear friend & fairly constant work mate has died. Ian Lavender
‘I have no words or funny stories for the moment just this. His timing was sublime from Shakespeare to Cooney and to have shared the stage with him through literally hundreds of performances was a privilege.’
And Hi-Di-Hi star Jeffrey Holland posted: ‘So sad to hear Ian Lavender has left us. Had the privilege of understudying him in the Dads Army stage show back in the day. Went on for him at one performance and didn’t get a laugh all afternoon proving there was only one Private Pike! Sending love to Miki and the family.’
