Reading out the British public's scores in the song contest

Catherine Tate has been picked to read out the UK’s scores at Saturday’s Eurovision final.

The comic has been chosen by BBC bosses deliver the results of the UK’s national jury live from the Liverpool Arena on Saturday.

She said: ‘It’s very exciting to be announcing the iconic "douze points" at Eurovision. It’s just a foot in the door really as next year I hope to be the UK entrant!’

Tate has a new BBC comedy in the pipeline, Queen Of Oz, in which she plays a disgraced member of the Royal Family sent to live in Australia.

And she will be reprising her role of Donna in Doctor Who later this year as part   of the show’s 60th anniversary.

The comedian follows in the footsteps of  AJ Odudu, Amanda Holden, Nigella Lawson, Mel Giedroyc, Richard Osman, Alex Jones and others in reading out the results.

Holden attracted criticism for making dud jokes when she took on the role in  2021, telling the Europe-wide audience: ‘Bonsoir. Goedenavond. That is good evening in French and Dutch although I’ve got absolutely no idea which is which.’

The Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final airs on BBC One and iPlayer from 8pm on Saturday.
