Awards hail Big Boys and Motherland
Big Boys and Motherland are being lauded by TV critics – scooping three nominations apiece in the Broadcasting Press Guild award.
Big Boys creator Jack Rooke has been shortlisted for best writer and for the breakthrough talent award, while his Channel 4 show is up for best comedy.
The other nominees in that category are Derry Girl, Rowan Atkinson’s Netflix series Man v Bee and the Motherland Christmas Special.
Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee is also up against Rooke in the writing category alongside Motherland and Bad Sisters co-writer Sharon Horgan; Sherwood’s James Graham; and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, who also penned SAS Rogue Heroes.
And up for the BPG Breakthrough Talent Award alongside Rooke is Lenny Rush from Am I Being Unreasonable? and BBC political correspondent Ione Wells.
In the best entertainment category, Gold’s Billy Connolly Does... has been nominated alongside Rob & Romesh Vs, Strictly Come Dancing and The Traitors.
Motherland’s third nomination comes for Anna Maxwell Martin in the best actress category, where she’s also recognised for her work on A Spy Among Friends.
The other best actress nominees are Ambika Mod for This is Going to Hurt; Leslie Manville for Sherwood and Magpie Murders; and Nicola Walker for Marriage and The Split
This is Going to Hurt’s Ben Whishaw is up for best actor alongside Connor Swindells for SAS Rogue Heroes; Gary Oldman for Slow Horses; and Paapa Essiedu for The Lazarus Project, The Capture, and Gangs of London
Winners will be announced at The Royal Horseguards Hotel in Whitehall, London, on Friday March 24.
