Peter Kay’s doing secret stand-up gigs
Peter Kay has been playing a string of secret stand-up gigs, sparking speculation he is set to announce a major tour.
The comic has been performing at the Lowry in Salford this week that have been so hush-hush that fans report having to ‘whisper’ the name of the show when picking up tickets.
And others told of having to hand their phones in when entering the venue’s intimate 120-seater studio.
The news was reported by the Manchester Evening News, which quoted a now-deleted tweet saying: ‘Omg just been to a secret gig with Peter Kay at The Lowry. Best Night of My Life ever, that guy is a legend. Phones in locked pouches, secret ticket collection, the lot. Still buzzing.
‘It was the weirdest but best experience ever. He is just such a grounded fella. The gig was really raw and unpolished which was what made it so personal. The whole room was giddy. It was brilliant..
Another fan tweeted last night: Just got back from a great night attending a surprise Peter Kay concert in Manchester. A really fun night!’
The gigs have been widely assumed to be a warm-up for an imminent UK tour.
He famously pulled an arena tour planned for 2018 just days after announcing it, citing unforeseen family circumstances.
Since then he has made only a few stage appearances including charity Q&A shows and DJing his Dance For Life charity events.
Jason Manford fuelled speculation of a tour announcement earlier this summer when he sang his friend’s praises on a Dublin radio station, saying: ‘He's just an absolute legend isn't he? What a treasure. Hopefully back himself soon, doing stand-up, so keep your eye out for his tour. Not that he needs you to buy a ticket as much as I do.’
