Man Down's Gwyneth Powell dies at 76

Actress best known as Grange Hill's Mrs McClusky

Gwyneth Powell, who played Greg Davies’s mum on Man Down, has died at the age of 76.

However she will be best known to a generation for playing headteacher Bridget McClusky in BBC series Grange Hill for a decade from 1981.

Her representative, Matthew Lacey, said in a statement on behalf of the family that Powell died last Thursday in Brighton ‘after complications following a major operation for a perforated colon’.

The statement added: ‘She passed away peacefully, with her husband [actor Alan Leith] and niece at her bedside.

‘Gwyneth will be greatly missed by her adoring family and friends along with her many fans from multiple TV appearances.’
