Seinfeld star Estelle Harris dies at 93
Estelle Harris, who played George Costanza’s overbearing mother on Seinfeld has died at the age of 93.
As well has her character in the top-rated sitcom – also called Estelle – she was also known for voicing Mrs. Potato Head in Toy Story. The fourth film in the franchise, released in 2019, was her last role.
Her son Glen Harris issued a statement saying: ‘ It is with the greatest remorse and sadness to announce that Estelle Harris has passed on today, leaving a hole in my heart too deep to describe.
‘Her kindness, passion, sensitivity, humour, empathy and love were practically unrivaled, and she will be terribly missed by all those who knew her.’
Jason Alexander, who played George Costanza, tweeted: ‘One of my favorite people has passed - my tv mama, Estelle Harris. The joy of playing with her and relishing her glorious laughter was a treat. I adore you, Estelle. Love to your family. Serenity now and always.’
And comedian and fan Richard Herring said: ‘he Costanzas are one of the great joys of Seinfeld. Always funny and horrifying. Such great performances from Jerry Stiller and Estelle Harris. RIP’
Born in New York in 1928, Harris did not pursue acting until 1977, after her three children had grown up.
She started in community theatre and her other credits included Dave the Barbarian Star Trek: Voyager, Kim Possible and Family Guy, in which she played Death’s mother.
