Comedy Central orders Nigel Ng sketch show
Comedy Central has commissioned a new short-form sketch show, East Mode with Nigel Ng, for its digital channels.
The eight-part series – which launches on Friday – is also written and performed by fellow comedian Evelyn Mok, Ng’s co-host on the podcast Rice To Meet You.
As well as being distributed via YouTube and Facebook Watch, the episodes will also will get a TV broadcast later this year.
Ng said: ‘This is all very exciting. I couldn't see my family over Lunar New Year but this is so good it almost makes up for it.’
Comedy Central says the 'mischievous new sketch show [delivers] a playful and utterly unique lens into the world right now.’
Characters include a mismatched heist crew, obsessive parents and an intrusive artificial intelligence.
Malaysian-born Ng is already an online star thanks to his portrayal of Uncle Roger, a middle-aged Asian man reviewing an egg fried rice video.
In 24 months, he has amassed 400 million views on his YouTube channel and a combined following of more than 12 million across his social media platforms His comedy content regularly goes viral on Chinese platforms; Weibo, BiliBili and Douyin.
His podcast: Haiyaa with Nigel Ng - the same title as his forthcoming tour – has recently launched with Bill Burr’s production company, All Things Comedy.
Ng is also developing a TV project with Gordon Ramsay’s company, Studio Ramsay, a sitcom project and an animated series based on Uncle Roger.
The supporting cast for East Mode with Nigel Ng includes Mei Mac, Grace Fan, Nicky Cheung , Andrea Valls, Ed Jones, Martin Sarreal, Jacqueline Tate and David Kirkbride.
