We Are Lady Parts named best comedy

Joe Lycett, OT Fagbenle and Rob & Romesh Vs also scoop Edinburgh awards

We Are Lady Parts has been named best comedy at the Edinburgh TV festival awards.

The jury said of the Channel 4 show about an all-female, all-Muslim punk band ‘it dared to be original’.

Star Anjana Vasan has also been nominated for best actor in a TV comedy, but that award went to OT Fagbenle for Maxxx. Judges called him ‘really charismatic and funny… an all-round talent'

Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back won the award for best popular factual series, with judges praising it for the way it ‘reinvents consumer affairs to engage a new audience’. Another said they ‘watched the whole thing with a smile on my face’.

Accepting the award, Lycett thanked the team who helped him make the show and said: ‘I am thrilled with that. I’ve always wanted to be the best popular factual series ever since I was a little boy!’

Rob & Romesh Vs, which was described by judges as 'pure, unfiltered entertainment’, was named best entertainment series ahead of fellow nominees including Taskmaster and The Last Leg.

In a filmed acceptance speech, Romesh Ranganathan said: ‘It’s both an absolute joy to have won this and also to know that because I haven’t been asked to do my best presenter [speech], I haven’t won that.’

Rob Beckett added: ‘I don’t care about that. I’m really happy.’
