Frankie Boyle writes his first novel
Frankie Boyle has written his first novel, described as a ‘multicultural, postcolonial’ story about his home city of Glasgow.
The comic told his 240,000 Instagram followers that he would finish the as-yet untitled book in the ‘next two or three weeks, maybe’ and was now seeking a publisher.
Boyle said had originally planned to release the novel as a spoken word piece as part of his ongoing Prometheusseries of audiobooks - until he realised he couldn’t cover all the accents needed.
‘I'm quite impressed with myself for persevering with something novel length,’ he said in a video message. ‘I’m not really a persevering sort of guy
He said the original idea for the novel was that it would be.
But he said: ‘It got longer and a lot of the joy of it is in the dialogue… There’s a character who's a London woman with a Zambian background, there's a middle-aged guy from Edinburgh, there's an Indian lassie, there's a Scottish Chinese guy, all this kind of stuff. But as it got longer I realised I can't do all those voices!’
He added: ‘It's really good, I'm really proud of it… I guess I'll have to find a publisher, I've never really done that before so let's see what happens.’
Prometheus IV has just been released, comprising two of his Guardian end-of-year columns plus his 2020 book The Future of British Politics. It is available for free on his website or Soundcloud.
He suggested anyone who enjoyed it could donate to Medecins Sans Frontiers.
