Second series for In My Skin

Comedy-drama renewed after scooping an RTS award

The BBC has ordered a second series of the dark comedy-drama In My Skin, about about a teenage girl whose mother has been sectioned in a mental facility.

The announcement follows the series’ success at the RTS Programme Awards last night, where it was named best drama.

However the show is a commission from the BBC’s comedy department and started life as a BBC Three Comedy Slice pilot in 2018

Another five episodes have been ordered, starring Gabrielle Creevy and Bethan, who ‘navigates the heady highs of falling in love with her dream woman and planning to fly the nest, all while still desperately trying to hide the violent, unsafe reality of her home life’.

The BBC Three series, which is available on the Hulu platform in the US,  also stars Jo Hartley her mother, and is written by Kayleigh Llewellyn.

She said: ‘I cannot wait to finish telling Bethan’s story, or "the tricky second album’"as I like to call it.

‘I’ve been sat at my laptop every day for months writing the scripts, oscillating between laughing uproariously and ugly crying. Granted that could also be to do with the global pandemic, but I hope the end product will have a similar effect on our audience.

‘I am incredibly lucky to be working with a coven of brilliant women on this show, and we’re particularly excited to have Molly Manners joining the team to direct series two.’

Shane Allen, the controller or BBC comedy commissioning, ordered the show from production company Expectation.

He said: ‘In My Skin is written and executed with its heart on its sleeve and brings compassion and humour to a world laced with vulnerability.

‘The show portrays a contemporary Welsh spirit which connects with audiences all over the UK as its authenticity punches through."’
