Brexiteer comic Dominic Frisby's bid for No1
Comedian Dominic Frisby is hoping to have a Brexit Day No 1 with a song deliberately designed to rile Remainers.
But one of the main obstacles to 17 Million Fucks Offs topping the charts are Brussels supporters campaigning to get the EU’s official anthem, Beethoven’s Ode To Joy, to take the top spot instead.
Frisby’s populist track literally waves two fingers at the establishment figures given a bloody nose by the referendum result, with a list of leading Remainers being told where to go.
The comic had been announced as a Brexit party candidate at last year’s general election, but stood aside for personal reasons and ‘because it wasn't worth the abuse’. However he has not given up the cause.
He told Chortle that the battle for No 1 was ‘me, a hopelessly disorganised bloke who happened to write a tune one day with his mate Martin, up against a subsidised European colossus. Not a bad metaphor for Brexit.
‘Beethoven’s possibly the greatest composer who ever lived. But, on the whole, all things considered, I think my gags are funnier. I think Ludwig would approve. He was a great anti-authoritarian. Given the choice between a big budget, orchestral extravaganza selected to champion a crony-capitalist, bureaucratic gravy train and a comic song written by a bloke who doesn’t even have a record deal, I think I know which Ludwig would be buying.
‘If I don't win, I will of course be demanding that this week's Official Charts be re-run, because people who bought Ode To Joy or Eminem didn't know what they were buying."’
As of this morning, the Andre Rieu-conducted version of Ode To Joy was No 1 in the Amazon download, with Frisby and No 2. On iTunes, Beethoven also had the No1 slot with 17 Million Fuck Offs at No 3, behind The Weekend.
But the comic admits he’s unlikely to take the coveted top spot as the algorithms that determine chart positions are weighted against him.
‘The likes of Stormzy, Eminem (who has a new album) and Lewis Capaldi and their powerful record labels all have systems in place to get their songs up the rankings, and I can’t compete with any of that,’ he wrote on Spiked. ‘But even so, it’s worth a punt.’
He added that he would be giving profits from his song to a charity set up to help the victims of grooming gangs.
