After Life is Netflix's No2 series of 2019

...and The Crown is nowhere to be seen

Ricky Gervais’s After Life was the second-most watched Netflix series in the UK this year.

His comedy – about a man who starts acting without any care about how he’s perceived after the death of his wife – was only beaten by US fantasy show  The Witcher.

When films are also included, After Life came in at No 6. The most popular was the documentary  The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Gervais tweeted a link to the tables saying he had the ‘best fans in the world.’

Despite the acres of coverage devoted to The Crown by the royalty-obsessed media, Peter Morgan’s fictionalised account of the family history did not make the top 10.

Netflix does not usually release exact numbers of viewers – and certainly not with the independent scrutiny of traditional TV ratings.

The list is thought to be based on the number of UK accounts that have watched at least two minutes of a title during its first 28 days on release.
