BBC buys Shrill
BBC Three is to air American comedy Shrill, in which Saturday Night Live star Aidy Bryant plays an overweight young woman, Annie, who wants to change her life — but not her body.
Originally made for Hulu in the US, the series also features Lolly Adefope as her best friend and roommate Fran.
Sue Deeks, the BBC’s head of programme acquisition, said: ‘Annie is such a relatable and engaging character, I am sure that BBC Three viewers will enjoy watching her navigate her way through life with warmth, humour and increasing confidence.’
The six 25-minute episodes in season one will be released as a boxset on BBC iPlayer from Sunday December 15.
Receiving largely positive reviews, the comedy has recently finished filming its second series in Portland Oregon, and will air in the US in January.
Shrill also stars Luka Jones, Ian Owens, John Cameron Mitchell and Patti Harrison and is executive produced by SNL supremo Lorne Michaels and Pitch Perfect star Elizabeth Banks.
The BBC acquired the rights to the show – which was inspired by the book Shrill: Notes From A Loud Woman by Lindy West – from Warner Bros. Television
