Bafta to honour Steve Coogan

After playing Stan Laurel he wins the Charlie Chaplin award

Steve Coogan is to receive this year’s Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy from Bafta.

The awards are the biggest event the academy holds outside the UK and will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on October 25.

Bafta’s LA chief executive Chantal Rickards said: ‘Throughout his three-decade career, Coogan has mastered the art of making people laugh and continues to entertain audiences with his brilliant portrayal of comedic characters.

‘His most popular creation – the politically incorrect media personality, Alan Partridge – garnered him worldwide recognition as one of the greatest TV characters. Coogan’s countless achievements make him an incredibly deserving recipient.’

The ceremony will also honour  Jane Fonda and Jackie Chan, while previous Charlie Chaplin winners have included Sacha Baron Cohen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Ricky Gervais.

Coogan recently played Stan Laurel on film, and his upcoming films include Michel Winterbottom’s Greed for Sony Pictures, voicing a role in the animated film The Adventures of Drunky co-starring Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Tambor and Nina Arianda and Hot Air, opposite Neve Campbell and Skylar Austin.
