Big Mouth strikes again, and again, and again

Three more series for Netflix animated comedy

Netflix has renewed its animated comedy Big Mouth for three more seasons.

The series revolves around a group of adolescents as they grapple with the changes their bodies are going through and their growing sexuality – with the help or otherwise of Hormone Monsters and the Shame Wizard

Creators Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg – who based the show on their own childhoods – confirmed the news at Montreal’s Just For Laughs festival today.

And they, and the rest of the creative team, revealed some of the plots of season 3, which will be released in the autumn, including the addition of a Menopause Banshee, and a storyline in which lead character Andrew lusts after his cousin and wonders if he should pursue it.

Another episode, written by star Jak Knight, revolves around the story of Duke Ellington losing his virginity at 13. The ghost of the jazz great, as voiced by Jordan Peele, lives in Nick’s attic in the show and sometimes offers him advice.

At Just For Laugh's ComedyPro strand, the team spoke about the creative freedoms Netflix gave them, with only a few notes on the three seasons so far, including a ban on Knight using the N-bomb and an instruction to serialise the show with an ongoing storyline, rather than having the standalone episodes of a traditional network sitcom.

‘We find that artistically more gratifying,’ Kroll said. ‘The other note they gave us was to add ‘Easter eggs’ [gags hidden int he background], so we spend time writing those.’

Announcing the renewal for seasons 4, 5 and 6, Netflix executive Mike Moon said: 'Big Mouth brilliantly captures the most awkward phase in a person’s life, puberty, in a hilarious yet heartwarming way. We couldn’t be more excited to continue our relationship with [production company] Brutus Pink and bring more stories, more humour, and more hormones to Netflix members around the world.’
