Comic to star in Clifford, The Big Red Dog movie

Jack Whitehall is to star in a big-screen adaptation of the classic kids' book  Clifford, The Big Red Dog.

The comedian – who has recently filmed a major role in the Disney movie Jungle Cruise alongside Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Emily Blunt – has landed the lead adult role in the family film.

He plays Uncle Casey, who helps his niece Emily Elizabeth and her pet escape the clutches of a greedy genetics company after the pooch undergoes a massive growth spurt.

Darby Camp, who plays Reese Witherspoon’s daughter on HBO's Big Little Lies, has landed the child lead role.

Walt Becker is directing the project, which is set to begin shooting next month in New York, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Author Norman Bridwell wrote 80 titles in the Clifford series, between 1963 and his death five years ago.
