Derry Girls gets a third series

'Erin and the eejits live to fight another day'

Channel 4 has ordered a third series of Derry Girls.

The broadcaster has announced that six more half-hour episodes have been commissioned as the second series came to a close tonight 

The comedy has been  ratings and critical hit, with the first episode attracting a consolidated audience of 3.2million viewers, which makes it Channel 4’s biggest UK comedy launch episode for 15 years. 

Ian Katz, director of programmes at Channel 4, says: ‘At a time of great uncertainty about the future of the country, thank god we have one unequivocally good piece of news to look forward to: the Derry Girls will be back to make our lives a bit brighter and more fun.’

The show is written by Lisa McGee, who sad: ‘I love writing this show and I'm so thrilled to be able to continue the Derry Girls story, thank you Channel 4, Erin and the eejits live to fight another day.’

It stars Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan,  Jamie-Lee O'Donnell and Dylan Llewellyn, as well as Tommy Tiernan, Tara Lynne O’Neill, Ian McElhinney, Kathy Kiera Clarke and Siobhan McSweeney as Sister Michael, the straight-talking headmistress of Lady Immaculate College.

The series was recommissioned by Katz with head of comedy Fiona McDermott and commissioning editor Jack Bayles.
