Channel 5 orders a 'docu-sitcom'

Like a scripted comedy, but without the writers

Channel 5 has ordered what it is describing as a ‘docu-sitcom’, showing the humour in a real-life Welsh family – but without the need to employ comedy writers.

Instead, the two-part programme will follow the family through a number of ‘relatable situations’ such as a visit from a grandmother, a driving test and a meeting of in-laws.

The show is set in the South Wales Valleys and has the working title Our Happy Valley Life.

Executive producer Sophie Jones, from Story Films, said: ‘I’ve spent a lot of time in the Valleys and it’s one of the few places where a strong sense of community still exists in Britain. The unique sense of humour is absolutely a part of that."

Channel 5 commissioning executive Denise Seneviratne, added: ‘This will be a real, often hilarious glimpse into family life in the valleys - made with authenticity and collaboration with our real-life cast.

‘Sitcoms are a reflection of some of the everyday absurdities of family life- so flipping it and applying those beats to a real family is an exciting genre-crossing prospect. And the Valleys is really the only place to do it.’
