How to get ahead in comedy...
Chortle is to run a series of monthly series aimed at helping comedians and would-be comedians advance in the business.
Each of the evenings in the Museum Of Comedy in Central London will comprise two events featuring panels and workshops from some of the most respected experts in the business.
The series kicks off on May 7 with writer and producer Henry Normal offering a comedy writing workshop and a panel session on how to make a successful comedy workshop.
Along with Steve Coogan, Normal ran Baby Cow Productions for more than 17 years, producing more than 450 TV shows and a dozen films, from The Royle Family to Gavin & Stacey and from the Mighty Boosh to Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa.
In this session he will discuss the 20 worst mistakes writers make when submitting scripts and the 20 most frequently asked questions
Most importantly, he answers any writer’s questions frankly and thoroughly to give everyone the best insight into the comedy writing business you can squeeze into an hour.
That will be followed by the podcast session, offering tips on how to create, record and market your idea.
It features comedian Danielle Ward, the creator of the podcast panel show Do The Right Thing; Sam Shetabi, a content manager at podcast network Acast where he oversees podcasts including Off Menu, Athletico Mince and The High Low; and podcast producer Ben Walker, whose credits include Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast and Pappy's Flatshare Slamdown.
The next event, on June 4, will feature Julia McKenzie, the head of radio comedy for BBC Studios, discussing how to get a start writing and performing in radio, and a panel on how to make a splash at the imminent Edinburgh Fringe.
There will also be a chance to network in the bar following each session.
Single sessions are priced £12 each, but you can attend both in one night for just £18 – while it’s £40 to see all six. Book here - and discounts are automatically applied at the checkout if you put all the sessions you wish to attend in your basket.
