£5k to help her follow in the footsteps of the Royle Family creator

The BBC has announced the second winner of the Caroline Aherne bursary.

Amy Gledhill, a stand-up and half of sketch duo The Delightful Sausage, will receive £5,000 plus mentoring from a BBC commissioning editor.

Gledhill – who performs in her sketch group dressed as a hotdog without acknowledging the fact – was revealed as the recipient on The One Show tonight.

She tweeted: 'This is such a huge deal and I'm absolutely thrilled.'

The BBC seeks to help character comedians who 'radiate a northern authenticity' with the award, reflecting the Royle Family creator it is named after.

Last year's winner – the first – was stand-up and writer Sophie Willan, from Bolton.
