Broadcaster buys reruns of hit sitcom

Cheers is coming back to Channel 4.

The broadcaster has signed a new deal to air reruns of the show which helped established its comedy credentials in the 1980s.

Cheers first aired on Channel 4 in February 1983, three months after the channel launched, and it went on to run  for 11 series, clocking up 270 episodes.

The last ever episode, in 1993, attracted 150 million viewers in the US.

Spin-off Fraser continues to be part of Channel 4’s morning line-up of comedy imports.

The broadcaster’s deal for Cheers is part of a raft of shows brought from  CBS Studios International,  which also includes the Harry Styles produced Happy Together,  the reimagining of the fantasy drama Charmed for E4, future seasons of The Good Fight on More4, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which will air on 4Music; 90210 for All 4; and the sitcom Rules Of Engagement for E4.
