Golden Globes confirm Mrs. Maisel is marvellous
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – Amazon’s comedy-drama series about a fictional pioneering female stand-up – scooped two Golden Globes last night.
Hollywood bible Variety described its win for best TV comedy series – ahead of Black-ish, Master of None, SMILF and Will & Grace – as a ‘surprise’.
Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladinom who previously co-created Gilmore Girls, said: ‘The great thing about awards is it makes the people who are investing in your show feel like their money has been well spent. That is very important.’
Rachel Brosnahan, who plays the lead role of a Jewish housewife in 1958 New York who discovers a knack for stand-up, took the Golden Globe for best actress in a TV comedy.
She said: ‘I am so endlessly proud to be a part of it, but there are so many women's stories out there that still need and deserve to be told.’
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has already been renewed for a second series.
Comic Aziz Ansari won best actor in TV comedy for his Netflix series Master of None – the first Asian star to take the accolade.
In the movie categories, Lady Bird won best musical or comedy and its star Saoirse Ronan best actress in the same category. James Franco won best actor for his role as terrible film-maker Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist
